Big news from Microsoft! Last week, they signed a huge deal with Constellation Energy, a company that runs nuclear power plants.
Microsoft is going to get energy for its data centers from Constellation’s Three Mile Island Unit 1 nuclear plant for the next 20 years. This plant will give them 835 megawatts of power once it’s up and running.
Microsoft isn’t the only one looking at nuclear energy.
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, thinks nuclear power is the future for AI data centers. Amazon is on board too—they bought a nuclear-powered data center in Pennsylvania for $650 million earlier this year.
These companies, including Alphabet (Google’s parent company), have big plans to run their data centers on green energy. Microsoft’s goal is to be fully green by 2030, but with the rise of AI, this might be harder to reach.
As demand for electricity grows with AI development, everyone is trying to find cleaner energy options.
